Tiger Woods apology too choreographed to be authentic

Tiger Woods public confession was supposed to resurrect the shattered image of the world’s greatest sportsman and re-establish the bond with his global fan base. Instead, the speech seemed far too choreographed to be authentic.

Tiger Woods and mother

In what appeared and sounded like a speech and event put together by a team of advisers, the speech included all the right statements but what it lacked was authenticity.

Seems he and his marketing spin doctors who once sold the world on his squeaky-clean, boy-next-door image are at it again.

Yes his speech included the fact that he has found religion, his wife is a saint and his mom is front and centre providing hugs all round for the only camera Woods allowed in the room.

Seem the rebranding of the world’s No. 1 golfer and money-making machine has now begun.

“I have a lot of work to do and I intend to dedicate myself to doing it. Part of following this path for me is Buddhism, which my mother taught me at a young age. People probably don’t realize it but I was raised a Buddhist and I actively practiced my faith from childhood until I drifted away from it in recent years.”

“I would like to thank my friends at Accenture and the players in the field this week for understanding why I’m making these remarks today.”

Amazing as it was to have him include this sponsor, one can only think of the criticism heard for days about the fact that Woods’ decision to conduct his press conference was on the second day of the Accenture Classic. This was seen as a snub by many.

“I have always tried to maintain a private space for my wife and children. They have been kept separate from my sponsors, my commercial endorsements. When my children were born, we only released photographs so that the paparazzi could not chase them. They staked out my wife and they pursued my Mom. Whatever my wrongdoings, for the sake of my family, please leave my wife and kids alone.”

Yes, we can understand wanting privacy, but can an individual legitimately expect to be left alone by the press when he has amassed a billion-dollar fortune, at least in part, on the basis of a public image that turned out to be a sham? Although there is a legitimate question about proportionality here, the deeper truth is that there is only one person to blame for the press intrusion — Woods himself. Lets not forget the fact that Woods has made a lot of money peddling his family on website, in front of the cameras, and at other official events.

“Thirteen years ago my dad and I envisioned helping young people achieve their dreams through education. This work remains unchanged and will continue to grow. From the Learning Centre students in Southern California to the Earl Woods scholars in Washington DC, millions of kids have changed their lives, and I am dedicated to making sure that continues.”

Yes, consider the millions of kids who now realize they have looked up to a lying, cheating, manipulating idol.

“I thought I could get away with whatever I wanted to. I felt that I had worked hard my entire life and deserved to enjoy all the temptations around me. I felt I was entitled. Thanks to money and fame, I didn’t have to go far to find them. I was wrong. I was foolish. I don’t get to play by different rules.”

Woods claimed in his speech to have gone to therapy which is wonderful but he did forget the fact that he went boating with his buddies after this scandal broke, has struck a deal with Getty (which he has made sure have taken the newest pics of him as he demands), and refused to make this a real press conference where questions could be asked.

The way in which this event was being structured was so disrespectful to the normal code of journalism that the Golf Writers Association of America officially decided to boycott Tiger’s big media event.

Tiger also said he would be returning to rehab tomorrow, but also left open the possibility of a return to competitive golf this year.

Now in light of this, some of his mistresses are speaking. Veronica Siwik Daniels held a press conference after Tiger’s.

Here she speaks.
