MTV 2010 video awards air tonight

MTV Networks is airing its 27th annual Video Music Awards live tonight (September 12) at 9 pm EDT at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Opening the show is a performance byEminem, nominated for Best Male Video and Video of the Year.

Linkin Park, Usher, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Mary J Blige, Trey Songz, and Ne-Yo will also be performing. Hosting the show is American comedian and talk-show host Chelsea Handler, the second woman to ever host the show.

MTV recently added new presenters to the program that include Cher, Ellen DeGeneres, Katy Perry, the cast of Glee, Rosario Dawson, Chris Pine, and Kim Kardashian.

Lady Gaga leads the nominations with 13 nominations, including Video of the Year (for both “Bad Romance” and “Telephone” featuring Beyoncé), Best Female Video, and Best Pop Video. Also in the running for Video of the Year are Florence + The Machine, 30 Seconds To Mars, and B.o.B.

Nominees for Best New Artist are Ke$ha (“Tik Tok”), Jason Derulo (“In My Head”), Justin Bieber featuring Ludacris (“Baby”), Nicki Minaj featuring Sean Garrett (“Massive Attack”), and Broken Bells (“The Ghost Inside”). Through the day of the show, fans can cast their vote for Best New Artist on the MTV website.

The awards will also be aired live in Australia on Monday, September 13, at 4 pm (AEST). Countries outside of North America can watch the taped broadcast on Monday, September 13. Check local listings for exact times and channels in your area.

The MTV News website will offer full coverage of the event (including live blogs of pre-show and the main event). Smartphone users can also stream live video footage of the event from cameras stationed on the red carpet, backstage, among the audience, and inside dressing rooms via an MTV News app. In addition, Droid users can stream dispatches hosted by MTV News’ Jim Cantiello via their own app.
